Comment: sorry I forgot to provide email.
Admin reply: Hi Marie, Thank you very much for contributing. We don't actually have to have an e-mail address to make the guestbook work. It is just there for providing a possible contact and to discourage abuse. Those addresses are available on this server to me alone and I don't reveal them to others, though I have considered sending an e-mail to some of the long lost Coalmontians and asking if they would be interested in contributing more information to our historical knowledge base. It is very exciting to hear from people who lived here years ago. Regards, Ole Juul

Comment: I was born in Coalmont in 1924. My father, Albert Hudson, was a steam engineer at the power house. I attended the two-room school, as did my older sister, Ethel. My younger sister, Irene, was born there in 1932.
We left when Ethel finished grade eight because there was no high school there,

Comment: I have been writing my biography We lived in Coalmont for two periods of my childhood and have many memories. In 1923 attended Grade two in a one room school in what had previously been an Anglican Church.I seemed to remember Mrs. Mills as my teacher's name. She taught three grades and was good.A few years later,I went Grade five or six in a new school. We lived with my grandmother and my Uncle Bill Matheson in an apartment attached to Matheson Bro's store. They had a ranch two or three miles north of Manning Siding. Along with a couple of playmates, we were accused of some serious mischief One was setting fire to the livery stable. we were busy getting horses and cattle and Dr Sheffield's car out. The cause was discovered to be spontaneous combustion.Along with a couple of playmates, we were accused of some serious mischief. One was causing two railway cars loaded with coal to upset We were later exonerated when investigators found the cause to be an old and rusted break in a rail. The engineer made amends a week or so later by giving us a ride in the cab of the old steam locomotive while he went a few miles to Barnes Siding to get a couple of cars of lumber from my uncles sawmill to hook on the coal train to Vancouver,Needless to say we were thrilled when he let us pull the lever which fed steam to the cylinders. The other boys were Sonny Shaw and Vernon Nelson.

Comment: I lived there in an apartment connected to Matheson Bros, store. Attended one room school in grades 2 & 3 and later in a larger school. There were three general stores in Coalmont then: Matheson Bros, Mactavish's and Rossiter's as well as a provincial liquor store. I remember several incidents and have included them in a biography I am writing.

Comment: Coalmont is such a lovely place to visit to get away for a while. My family has been camping in Rice's field since before I was born, and now I'm bringing my kids. We last visited on Labour Day weekend, and had the pleasure of visiting the ice cream kiosk (and buying t-shirts!), meeting Rolly and his animals (what a nice time the kids had), and seeing the grand tour of the hotel. We learned about Hattie and were able to visit the site of her old home as well as her final resting place. How sad. Finally, I am looking forward to hearing when a DVD of the hotel 'investigation' may be available to the public. See you all again very soon!
